RE: Taps for Donald Meslar

At the time that I served with Don Meslar at the 62nd MRU, he was an SP4 like myself. Meslar served as
a Personnel Accounting Specialist. He had a great sense of humor and a wonderful individual.

I was trying to locate Don Meslar for our first couple of reunions (2000 & 2002) but we were unable to contact him.

I played an audio cassette made by Roger Fransen back in July 1958 in the 62nd MRU Barracks. Roger was describing life with the 62nd MRU and activities in the Canal Zone and Panama. He was also interviewing various fellows and one happened to be Don Meslar. Don mentioned that he was from Hillside, NJ.

In trying to locate fellows for the 2014 Reunion, I asked Ronn Hoover to assist in locating Don Meslar. Not until only fairly recently, where we able to ascertain that Don had passed away. Ronn was able to discover that Don at at age 55 had passed away in 1995. Even though it was over 19 years ago, it brought sadness to my heart to learn that our buddy and fellow 62nd Veteran, Donald R. Meslar, had passed.

Although belated, we want to extend our sympathy to the Meslar Family.

With the first stanza from TAPS, we pay tribute and honor to the memory of our friend, Donald R. Meslar. RIP

Twenty One of us came together to celebrate the time we spent at the 62nd MRU/DPU during various dates of service with the unit. Our service dates spanned from 1958-1971. The following made the reunion: Chuck Baroo, Stan Bochniak, Dick & Kazia Chamberlain, Roger & Shirley Fransen, Clint "Mac" &
Diane La Rue, Don & Jean Liebner, CPT Jason Myers, Chaplain, Kenn "Ski" & Joyce Rutkofski, Col. Dale Sinnott (USAF) & Gary Sinnott, Jim & Ruby Strange,Ret. Maj. Jim & Sarah Triplett, Doug Viegut and Dave & Valli Whiteley. As always, we had a great time together. CPT Myers gave the Invocation and spoke briefly about his current assignment. Col. Dale Sinnott shared about some of his experiences.

The women enjoyed making new friendships among themselves.

While calling about our upcoming reunion, I spoke with Valerie See informed us that Lynn passed away
on September 4, 2013.

He was survived by his wife of 37 years and two sons and a daughter.
We wish to express our deepest sympathy to his wife,Valerie, and other family members.

Lynn was an integral member of the 62nd MRU/DPU during the early 1960's.

I recently had an interesting conversation with Paul Leitl who served with the 62nd MRUDPU between 1960-1963.

The 2014 Encore Reunion announcement is printed in the American Legion Magazine under the Reunions Section.

Paul saw the notice and called me, today. He is looking forward to hear from fellows that served with him.

After serving with the 62nd in the CZ, Paul was assigned to the 5th Army in Chicago. He later enlisted in the Coast Guard. As a Chief Petty Officer he also served in Vietnam as a Medical Assistant.

Vivian Leavell, the daughter of SSGT. Earnest Gillespie, recently informed Jim Strange (62nd DPU 1965-67) that her father passed away on June 9, 2013. Jim was in the process of notifying her dad about our 2014 Encore Reunion.


We wish to express our sympathies to his wife, Virginia, and other family members of SSGT. Earnest Gillespie. He had served with the 62nd MRU/DPU between Early 1965 and Early 1968.


SSGT. Gillespie was an integral member of the 62nd MRU/DPU. Following his military career, Earnest worked for Civil Service at Ft. Campbell, KY.

Earnest was survived by his wife of 53 years, Virginia, and sons Earnest Gillespie, Jr. and Leonard Lee Gillespie, daughter Vivian Leavell and other family members.

It is with sadness to report that Jerry Wrinkle passed away.

Loren Brown called to say that Jerry Wrinkle passed away on a Sunday morning, August 11, 2013.

Jerry served with the 62nd MRU between 1/55 - 4/58. Those of us who served with Jerry remember
him as an excellent Personnel Accounting Section Chief. It was an honor to have served alongside him.
Jerry retired from the Army.

Since Jerry was a career soldier, you may have served with him at another Duty Station.

He and Sandy, his dear wife, attended our reunions. They were a warm couple to be around.

Good to read the Guestbook responses from Doug V. (WI), Terry R. (AZ), Dick P. (Iowa) and Dick C. (VA) concerning our May 2014 Encore Reunion.

Now, the following is a Paul Harvey, "Good Day" Story. It is really great to read how the 62nd Guestbook is helping fellows get reconnected. It was enjoyable reading about Gary S. (IL) and Ken "SKI" R. (IL). They were getting together for lunch after realizing they lived in the same town over 20 years.

It was good to receive Leo Zenter's email address through the efforts of Gary S. I checked in with Leo who was glad to hear about the reunion. He and his wife are planning to make our May 2014 Encore Reunion. They split their days between MT and AZ, the best of both worlds. :>) Kuddos, Gary!

Thanks so much to Dan Stewart, our wonderful Webmaster. Dan does so much behind the scenes research for us. We're looking forward to seeing Dan at our reunion along with our mutual friend, Ronn Hoover. They will represent the Lone Star, TX.

Good News...Early on, we have 17 who have expressed interest in the May 2014 Encore Reunion, even from as far west as California and TX. We have IL, Ohio, VA, PA and NC in the mix. So, these early numbers are very encouraging!

We are looking at 4 Days and 3 Nights in Columbia, SC. Checking In on Wed. May 21st and Checking Out on Sat. May 24th 2014. We will arrange the Room Booking in January 2014.

We are contacting fellows on file by both email and regular mail.

We have a beautiful setting for our 62nd Reunion Luncheon.

We were saddened to hear that our dear friend, Gus Frisco, passed away on November 26, 2012. We wish to express our sympathies to Jean Frisco, his precious wife, and to his family members and friends.

 
Gus and Jean were close friends with Tony and Betty Borrelli. Their relationship began when Gus (MP) and Tony (62nd) were stationed in the Panama Canal Zone along with their wives. Being enlisted personnel and not eligible for dependent quarters, they lived in Panama City with their wives. Both couples had maintained their friendship ever since their military relationship.

 

Gus (1957-1958) was with the Military Police at Ft. Clayton. He served on MP duty at the Back Gate Entrance to Ft. Amador.


 

Gus and Jean Frisco were invited guests of Tony and Betty Borrelli to the first reunion of the 62nd MRU/DPU in 2000 held at Ft. Jackson, SC. At this Reunion, Gus was made an Honorary Member of the 62nd MRU/DPU.


 

When I first spoke with Gus by phone, his sense of humor was contagious. He was very elated over the phone hearing that he and Jean were invited to the 62nd Reunion. I said, jokingly, to Gus that we could use a former Ft. Amador MP at the reunion, just in case. Gus responded that he would wear his MP Sleeve Band as well as having a whistle. (a sharp response)


 

We had some wonderful fellowship with Gus and Jean who attended all five 62nd Reunions ( 2000, 2002 (Branson, MO), 2004 (San Antonio, TX), 2006 (Ft. Jackson, SC) and 2008 (Pigeon Forge, TN). Later, correspondence by cards and phone calls only added to very special and meaningful moments with the them.


 

Jean knows that Gus is now free of his pain and with his Savior. We invite you to uphold Jean Frisco, his dear wife, in your thoughts and prayers at this time.


 

In memory of Gus Frisco who loved and served his nation, we honor him with TAPS. Rest in Peace.

To Bob's family and friends, the 62nd Veterans wish to express their sympathy with the passing of Bob Buckley.

 

On Dec. 18th, Robert Buckley passed away after a long health battle. Bob and Ronn Hoover were good friends, since serving together at Ft. Amador between 1959-1961. Through the years,they maintained their friendship by written correspondence and phone.


 

Ronn said that Bob would begin his conversation talking about the fellows and the great times at Ft. Amador with the 62nd. Bob will surely be missed. Ronn wrote telling that come Spring, Tony, a close friend of Bob and Bob's brother will drive to CT to attend a small service with the family.


 
To the memory of Bob Buckley and for his service to our country, we remember Bob with two stanzas of TAPS...

We want to extend our deepest sympathy to Ralph Dostal's family members and friends.

 
 
Ronn Hoover recently learned and wanted all of us to know that Ralph Dostal (1959-1961)

 
passed away on September 29, 2012. Ronn and Ralph had been friends ever since they

 
shipped together to Panama. Ralph was with the Transportation Pool. The 62nd needed another

 
clerk. Ronn informed Sgt. Golden that Ralph had a college degree and the 62nd requested that

 
Ralph be reassigned to our unit. The rest was history.

 
 
With the loss of Ralph Dostal, we honor his memory and his service to our country

 
by the first and last stanza of TAPS.

While standing in line at Taco Bell, I saw the name tag of this auto mechanic. I mentioned having served in the Canal Zone. The name of the hospital in the Canal Zone was Gorgas Hospital, I said to him. He then told me that Col. Gorgas, an MD, was his great, great, great grandfather. The name on the mechanics name tag was James Gorgas! How often does something like that occur?

The final sentence of the Declaration of Independence bears testimony to their commitment to the cause and faith in God, namely:  "And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other lives our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor."  (Bold for emphasis) Many of these American Patriots paid dearly with their lives, fortunes and sacred honor, for example, Robert Morris (PA), a banker who financed the Revolutionary War, went bankrupt and ended in prison. Thank you Lord for Robert Morris.


 

We are a blest nation because of the many who risked all so that the unborn millions that were to come would be known as Americans. Yes, Lee Greenwood we join with you in God Bless the USA because we're Proud to be Americans.

On Thursday, June 14, our nation will be celebrating FLAG DAY. I was reminded of two writings
that honor our nation's flag. No doubt, you have heard or read these previously.

The first is "I AM YOUR FLAG" by Thomas E. Wicks, Sr. Here are a few lines, namely;
I was born June 14, 1777.
I am more than just cloth shaped into a design.
...I am the silent sentinel of freedom.
...I am the inspiration for which American Patriots
gave their lives and futures.

The second is "THE FLAG IS PASSING BY" by Henry Holcomb Bennet. Here are a few lines, as follows;
HATS OFF!
Along the street there comes
A blare of bugles, a ruffle of drums,
A flash of color beneath the sky;
HATS OFF!
The flag is passing by!
Blue and crimson and white it shines,
Over the steel-tipped, ordered lines:

It sure brings honor to our FLAG, when her citizens, young and old, gave thanks for Old Glory and
remove their hats/caps. Sadly at times, we look around and notice those who have not removed
their hat/cap.

I'm also reminded that on Dec. 31, 1999, the flag of the United States was lowered at the
closing ceremony in Panama, ending the American Era in the Canal Zone.

Still, "She's a grand old Flag!"

In loving memory...Our dear friend, Betty Borrelli, the love of Tony's life, passed away recently.
We will miss Betty who had such a love for Jesus. Betty is now in the arms of her beloved Savior.

Tony and Betty attended several of our 62nd Reunions. At our 2000 and 2002 Reunions at Fort Jackson and Branson Reunions, respectively, we had the pleasure of listening to Tony's music.

In addition, Tony's keyboard music is what you hear when you open the 62nd's website. The song he plays is "You Belong to my Heart." That selection speaks volumes about the love Tony and Betty had in their hearts for one another. Tony and Betty are pictured together on Page 3 of our 62nd Web site.

On behalf of the 62nd MRU/DPU Veterans, families and friends, we extend our deep sympathy to Tony and his family.

Today (4/18/1942) is the 70TH Anniversary of the Lt. Col. Jimmy Doolitte and his Army Air Force's 16 Bomber Crews who bombed Tokyo, a daring and bold raid. The planes took off the Aircraft Carrier, the Hornet. We honor the courage and sacrifice of these patriotic men. The movie, 30 Seconds over Tokyo, honored there brave action.

Hello to all and Jud Gross.  I was Cpt. Triplett's clerk 1964-1965 and coded morning reports.  I remember "Col. Lukowitz" well.  I've been too busy on travel status to make a reunion, but maybe someday.  Have had many nice email chats with Jim Triplett-but have never been back to Panama.  Sometimes I follow CZ and Panama history since I was there and wonder at all that transpired.  Still riding motorcycles (rented) when out of town.  Went to Honolulu last year but Gov't wouldn't pay for more than 24 hours so had to fly out and back with no personal time. 


 

Working as a marketing manager for a DoD contractor.  Live outside of DC in Maryland.

Greetings 62nd MRU/DPU Fraternity! 


 

As the nation pauses to celebrate Independence Day this weekend, we will enjoy parties, parades and fireworks. In the midst of the joy and celebration it is so very important that we remember the sacrifices made by our forefathers as they envisioned a new form of government.


 

As each one inscribed his name on the Declaration of Independence, the mere act of signing could be considered treason against the British Crown. 


 

As the Declaration was read across the country, it was received with wild acclaim by many and outright disdain by others. But its words captured the imagination enough to compel the colonists to endure a long and hard war for independence, once they were provoked by the Boston Massacre and the first shots at Lexington. Our Founders knew their cause was being helped by Divine Providence.


 

Today, we pause also to remember our Troops and Civilian Defenders at home and abroad.  As we know, "Freedom isn't Free!" 


 

One of our early Founder Fathers was noted to have said that many sacrifices were made to purchase our country's freedom and wondered would future generations also sacrifice to preserve that freedom. 


 

Have an enjoyable Independence Day celebration with family, friends and neighbors!


 

We'll be joining with many Grassroots Americans at Marshall Park in Charlotte. A Patriotic Picnic July 4th Celebration will be enjoyed between 11am-3pm. Then, back to our neighborhood for the evening firework's display and some Washington D.C. annual Independence Day Celebration on TV. You know when they play the military branches' song, we all stand up, if we can pull ourselves out of the chair.

Honoring  D-Day Veterans!

My D-Day Veteran Hero is Anthony "Uncle Boots" Pagorek


   I had a wonderful phone conversation with my Uncle "Boots" (92). I
admire him and he's my American Hero. As a member of the 82nd
Airborne, he jumped on D-Day in Normandy. Was wounded the 5 or 6th day
and flown to Bristol, England hospital. After recovering,  he was
ordered to the Battle of the Bulge for duty with the 771st Tank
Company as a SGT. He had been a Tank Trainer in the States also.

He is a very self-effacing guy. He was just over in Europe serving our
country like all the other fellows. Serve he did. We placed his name
on the WWII War Memorial via the World War II Memorial Website. He's
fully aware of that
remembrance and recognition.

He earned 5 Battle Stars, 2 Purple Hearts and several Letters of
Commendation. He lives in the Cedar Lake area in Indiana.  Jean and I
hope to see him after leaving the 62nd MRUDPU 2009 Reunion being held
in Pigeon Forge, TN 8/31/09 to 9/2/09. We are really looking forward
to seeing him.

He always asks, "How is your family doing?" He told me that if the
good Lord gives him the time that he has a big hug waiting for us. I
responded in kind and added my tears will be falling all over his
shoulders.

So, that's a thumb nail sketch as to why my "Uncle Boots" (92) is my
beloved hero!  God bless his life.

We wish to express our deepest sympathy on the passing of George Siganos who passed away on September 20th to his wife, Elaine, son, James, daughter, Stacy and granddaughters, Brittney, Mindy and Ana and other family members.


 

George served with the 62nd MRU between 11/58-12/60 at Ft. Amador, CZ. He retired from the VA Data Processing Center at Ft. Snelling. Elaine shared that he enjoyed living out his retirement in the scenic north woods of Wisconsin. They enjoyed roaming the USA in their camper during the winter months.

Visitor Comments: I served near this great outfit, being at Ft. Clayton (903d AAA Bn) and Corozal (Quartermaster - on TDY to Civilian Personnel Office). Was in Zone from 1/55 to 9/56. Met some great folks, including Pete Blatchford of 62MRU who was at Corozal on TDY with me. Amador would be the choice post for anyone who went to Zone, but no one had it really bad unless it was the guys at Kobbe or those AAA fellows in jungle positions. Thank God for the peacetime Army, and for keeping our country safe.

I knew pretty much all that was written except that the day he left the service after his tour was September 29, 1945...I was born September 29, 1946. My mom Gertrude (Gerty to those who knew and loved her)passed away just before she made her 80th birthday. My dad is still with us born in 1921...so that makes him 85+ at the time of this note. Thanks for mentioning dad....a veteran of the USA ARMY...by the way...he got into the army at the age of 17.

Just spent a couple of hours looking at all the photos and reading the stories on your web site.  Great job putting all this together.  It brought back so many memories.


 

I was particularly interested in the military photos because of the up-coming Panama Canal Museum's exhibit slated for the Panama Canal Society Reunion in Orlando in 2006.  The theme is The Military in the Canal Zone between 1939 and 1999.  The 62nd MRU/DPU will be represented in this exhibit if I can get your permission to use the photos on your web site. I would also like to invite any of your viewers to share their military photos and stories and perhaps artifacts from that time period for this exhibit.  If you have such items please contact me at floridaopa@hotmail.com.  We at the Museum would certainly appreciate showcasing your "stuff".  I can assure you it will be well taken care of and returned to you after the Reunion.

The long 14th inning Game 2 still must have
left a residue in my score posted in Entry #107
which should have read a 7-6 win (not 6-5) as a result of #22 Scott Podsednik's game winning 408 ft home run into the right center field stands on Minutue Maid Park.

By the way, Scott was born in West, Texas.
Guess in this game situation, not only were the eyes of Texas upon Scott, but so were the eyes of the Chicago White Sox fans.

Did anyone happen to see the five hour Victory
Celebration that Chicago had for the White Sox
Team? The confetti falling from the downtown buildings upon the parade and four Upper Deck Buses
that carried the team looked like a winter snowstorm. The crowd looked like around 100-150
thousand Chicago Fans. One boy about 12 years old was marching along and carring a plain large cardboard sign with black marker lettering that read, "The best birthday a kid could ever have!"
I could identify with his emotion also whether as a younger or older "kid!"

At long last, the Southsiders and all Chicago can celebrate having the 2005 World Series Champions, after waiting 88 years. What a fantastic regular season and dynamic postseason string of victories. Finishing the regular season by winning the last two games against the Detriot Tigers and sweeping three games from the Cleveland Indians, the White Sox ended with 16-1, including the 11-1 postseason
play. The total runs difference in the World Series was only 6 runs. Then, to win a well pitched Game 4 by both starting pitchers and the World Series by a 1-0 score was a dramatic finish.

Growing up on the Southside of Chicago and attending the White Sox games with my dad, he made an early and life long White Sox fan out of me. How he would have loved to see his favorite White Sox win the World Series.

Jean and I had great box seats in front of our TV set and watched every game. Yes, even staying up till 2:15 am (EST) and of thrilling 14 inning game with the game winning 7-6 homer by #22 Scott Podsednik, White Sox Left Fielder.

The Houston Astros Owner was very gracious in defeat, but remarkably encouraging to his team for the remarkable season by making it into the World
Series.

It was a nail bitter of a World Series as both teams played each other down to the wire. The White Sox pitchers prevailed backed by outstanding
defensive play and timely hitting both long and small ball. WOW...Wonderful Our White Sox!!!

PS: Back in 1959 when the White Sox played the LA
Dogers in the World Series, we had just returned to Chicago in June 1959 from serving at Ft. Amador . So, it's been a long 46 years wait seeing them in another World Series and what a joyful outcome in 2005.

webpage. I spent eighteen months in Panama at Amador 1970-71. I was with the
Head Quarters Detachment and barracked in building #4.I have alot of fond
memories and the photos you provided brought them flooding back.
I have been able to get back to Panama but, not to Amador. I hope you have a

Gus and Jean Frisco (PA) will be celebrating their 50th Anniversary on Sept. 25th!

He and Jean were in the Canal Zone when Gus served as an MP. They lived in Panama with Tony and Betty Borrelli for a time when both couples shared an apartment.

Gus and Jean have been at all of our reunions. They are a wonderful couple to know and add that spice of life at the reunions.

We were saddened to hear that Manuel(Manny)Garcia
had passed away. We were recently informed that Manny had passed away in Nov. 2004.

Manny was with the 62nd MRU from 9/56-3/59. He is pictured with Jim Scarpello on the website's Page 2. Terry Rohr and Manny shared space on the second floor of the MRU Barracks. They made SP5 at the same time. Manny retired a couple of years ago from
his IT position in Miami, Florida.

Visitor Comments: In Memory of Lt. Col. (Ret.) Felix Smolenski, we sound Taps...

We were saddened to receive the following news that a former 62nd MRU CO Felix Smolenski passed away on April 30, 2005 as a result of a heart attack. He went into the hospital on April 25th after a heart attack and then suffered a second fatal heart attack on April 30th.

Felix was well known to many of us who served under him when he served as Major and our highly respected CO between 1955-58. He was an avid
fisherman and enjoyed inviting others to fish the waters of Panama. He retired at the rank of Lt. Colonel and was living in Texas. He will be sorely missed.

We had sent a letter about the Reunion 2006 by regular mail and received a note from Mrs. Eva Smolenski that her husband, Felix, had
passed away. They had just returned from a vacation to Puerto Vallarta the week before. They enjoyed taking trips South of the Border.

We wish to extend our deepest sympathy to Eva and the family on behalf of the former 62nd MRU/DPU and Detachment #1 Veterans.

Visitor Comments: General Douglas MacArthur (1880-1964) was our nation's last five-star general. His fiery command of many campaigns in WWI, WWII, and Korea distinguished him as a true patriot.
But MacArthur was also a man of prayer. "A Father's Prayer," written by the general "during the early days of the desperate campaigns in the Far East in WWII" is a model for every father today.
The prayer follows:
"Build me a son, O Lord, who will be strong enough to know when he is weak, and brave enough to face himself when he is afraid; one who will be proud and unbending in honest defeat, and humble and gentle in victory. Sadie was the wife of Bernie Weber who passed away
last year on May 26, 2004. Bernie was laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery on July 15, 2004 with full military honors.

With the loss of both parents within less than a year, we want to extend our deepest sympathies to Barbara and all of the Weber family on behalf of the 62nd MRU/DPU Veterans.

and have been friends ever since. When Jim was CO of the 62nd in Panama (1963-67), Bill was assigned to the 62nd as a CWO and served as XO. While in this position Bill was commissioned a 1ST LT and later transferred to Puerto Rico as Commander of Detachment #1, 62nd DPU.

He and Jim realized that Bill reported to the Antilles Command and that Jim had very little control over what they did or did not do. Yet the 62nd DPU was responsible for their submissions to
Washington. Jim did a staff study and recommended that Detachment #l no longer be under the operational control of the 62nd DPU. US Army
Southern Command and Department of the Army agreed and replaced Detachment #l with the 2nd DPU. 1ST LT Bill Givens was its first CO. Bill was promoted to CPT & MAJ, served in the Pentagon as did Jim and in several other important Army positions.

Visitor Comments: My wife and I attended the reunion at San Antonio in September.  Captain Triplett now Major, and Leo Zentner, and myself were the only ones from the 1965/1966 era at the reunion that I knew.  This seems to have really opened a window, for the guys that Leo and I served with during this time.  I have recently received several E mail addresses from others that I served with.  I enjoyed the memories of Fort Amador, and hope to visit the Canal Zone someday.

Visitor Comments: My uncle, Don Liebner, invited me to visit this site and sign in.  Enjoyed the picture tour, and saw more of the canal than I did when I was actually there.  Transited from Atlantic to Pacific in September 1984 as supply officer aboard USS PORTSMOUTH (SSN 707).  An inspection was around the corner and my chief cook's records were so out of whack that we sat on the messdecks, side by side, and fixed them while we slid through the canal.  I did catch some of the show through the periscope TV transmission, and I asked one of my storekeepers to shoot a few pictures with my camera.  But, the parade passed me by that day.

We (SBU-26 and Unit 8) taught Jungle School to the army there among our many duties in Central and South America, as you know some of which "never happened"!   13,000 army personnel, 800 navy. What a great time! Ahhh, the memories at Isla Grande, Nombre de Dios, and El Valle. We now live in Huntersville, NC and were referred here by Don Liebner.

us gathered together and had a great time.

A warm and engaging Welcome Reception at Comfort Inn East's Breakfast Area was held with delicious homemade cookies baked by the Inn Manager, Doris, for our enjoyment.

Jim Campbell honored us with a worshipful Invocation before our dinner was served.

Some interesting,humerous and delightful stories were shared at the Dinner Program by Bob Seibert, Donald Taffurelli and John Rolf on how the fellows ended up being assigned to the 62nd MRU/DPU. One a trained medic, one trained for Jungle Warfare with a fear of snakes and one whose name was selectively withheld and then chosen from a sergeant's desk drawer made up part of these interesting stories on how they ended up
at the 62nd.

on May 26, 2004. He will be buried at Arlington
National Cemetery on July 15th with full military
honors. His wife, Sadie, survives him. We wish to express our deepest sympathy and love to his wife and family. His daughter, Barbara, indicated that had suffered with Alzheimer's and other medical problems. Bernie served with the 62nd MRU between 1958-1960. Bernie was a member of the 62nd MRU's 1959 Ft. Amador Softball Championship Team. He also enjoyed company bowling. I had the pleasure to serve with Bernie between 1958-59. He will be missed.

Visitor Comments: Was in the 62d 1964-1965, typing, etc. Cpt. Triplett's treatment of enlisted personnel (I was an unwilling draftee)as responsible adults made my Army service a good memory. Out in late '65. Have had many pleasant email's with Jim.

Spent most off duty hours traveling around Panama and CZ by motorcycle, a habit which I continue today at 63.

There was a little sidewalk cafe somewhere in Panama City that had the best darn ravioli I have
ever had. Forgot where it was.

Had over 200 slides of CZ/Panama which I unfortunately lost somewhere 20 years ago.
Just retained a couple of blurred pictures from back of the 62d building. The Dino's pictures sure helped "refresh" the memories.

So, you're a 1966 BHS grad. Do you happen to know
any of the Dahlstroms?

My wife and I were in the CZ between 1/58-6/59 when I served with the 62nd MRU and she taught at
Ft. Kobbe Elem School (1st Grade). At the time, we lived in Diablo Heights and then Cocoli. We enjoyed the Isthumus. Balboa was a busy town. Enjoyed the good stuff at the Balboa Clubhouse.
Had to drive through daily on the way to Ft. Amador.

I served with the 62nd DPU from 1968 - 1069.  I live in the Rep. of Panama and own the Shamrocks Grill & Restaurant at the Elks Club in Balboa. If you get down here drop in and try our food. Visitor Comments: Commanded the 62nd DPU from April 1963 to April 1967.  The unit was full of gifted and friendly people.  We excelled in everything we did.  Our success there resulted in my promotion to major just after my reassignment to Washington, DC in 1967.  I loved Panama and the troops of the 62nd DPU.
